  • The Extracorporeal Life Support Service

     A Bridge to Transplant

    Perrotta, Terry

For Terry Perrotta, Rhode Island Hospital’s ECLS team was the difference between life and death. Hear her story.

The Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Service is a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists with expertise in the use of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

Rhode Island Hospital is the only ECLS Service in the state. We care for infants, children and adults from across Southern New England who have extreme cardiac or respiratory failure.

    What is ECMO?

ECMO is a vital cardiopulmonary bypass device that temporarily assumes the work of the heart and lungs, infusing oxygen into a patient's blood while removing carbon dioxide.

ECMO allows the patient’s lungs and heart to rest and heal, which is critical to full recovery. ECMO treatment can be crucial to stabilizing patients in preparation for organ transplant, surgery and other critical care services necessary.
Our ECLS team works in collaboration with world-class Rhode Island Hospital physicians with expertise in diverse specialties to treat conditions that may necessitate ECMO services.
