Adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

We are the first hospital in the region to offer access to an innovative heart-lung support system designed to quickly stabilize and support critically ill patients.

Available to both adult and pediatric patients, the ECMO program provides extracorporeal life support to replace or support a patient’s circulation and respiration, allowing the lungs and heart to rest and heal. It can be a lifesaving option when other respiratory therapies have failed.

Rhode Island Hospital has two dedicated systems for adult use and systems for pediatric patients. Our multidisciplinary team is available 24/7 for patient referral.
