The Physician-In-Chief:
Bringing Hospital and Community Together
Family practice physician Michael Fine, MD, is physician-in-chief
of the family and community medicine
department at Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital.
Fine notes that Rhode Island has lagged behind the national average in
the number of family practice physicians but is catching up. As a result,
the department of family and community medicine focuses on helping to
develop family practices in communities that need them, and improving
relationships between the community, the physicians and the hospital.
More about Fine:
- Fine, a 2005 Medicine as a Profession/Soros Advocacy Fellow, is past
president of the Rhode Island Academy of Family Physicians.
- He is board chair of the Occupational and Environmental Health
Center of Rhode Island.
- Fine also serves on the National Advisory Council to the National
Health Service Corps and the Primary Care Physician's Advisory
Committee to the Rhode Island Department of Health.
Fine believes the specialty of family practice means working with the
community as a whole to best serve patients' needs, with a focus on
access.
