  • Mood Disorders

  • The Mood Disorders Program at Rhode Island Hospital was established in 1996 and is dedicated to studying, evaluating and treating mood disorders such as major depression, chronic major depression and bipolar disorder.

The program has conducted studies sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, private foundations, pharmaceutical companies, the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and the National Alliance of Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. The Mood Disorders Program coordinates with the Family Research Program in assessment of family functioning and family treatment studies.

Our clinic treats all forms of mood disorders, including those that have not responded well to treatment in the past. We focus not only on symptoms, but also on quality of life, relationships, and meaningful life goals.

Our approach emphasizes living as fully as possible, even in the presence of unremitting symptoms. We coordinate care with other health care providers, and seek to provide comprehensive mental health care. We welcome input from families and significant others and encourage their involvement in treatment.

Treatments include pharmacotherapy, individual psychotherapy, family treatment and disease management (depression and bipolar illness). This program is located on the third floor of the Potter Building.
