President's Pursuit of Excellence Dinner

The Rhode Island Hospital Foundation raised nearly $300,000 at its signature fundraising event, the 3rd annual President’s Pursuit of Excellence Dinner, on November 9 at the Westin Hotel in Providence with 550 guests in attendance. All proceeds will support the Operational Excellence program, developed to improve patient safety and quality, enhance the patient experience, and engage staff and physician partners. The event recognized three champions for their commitment and dedication to Rhode Island Hospital. Russell and Marjorie Boss were named individual champions; Hasbro, Inc. was named corporate champion; and The Rhode Island Foundation was named community champion.

Donor Spotlight

Barbara Schepps, MD

When Barbara Schepps, MD, started her outstanding career in 1968, there were few women in medicine, let alone radiology. Of nine residents in her class, she was the only woman.

By the early 1980s, she realized that her unique position was less a challenge and more an opportunity to connect with her patients, most of whom were women just beginning to understand the vital importance of early detection of breast cancer.

“It makes me feel good to know I'm helping people.” -- Barbara Schepps, MD

As the technology for screening became more advanced—and more expensive—Schepps dreamed of building the first state-of-the-art breast imaging center in Rhode Island. The center would be open to all and would offer free care to all who need it. Rather than wait for change, Schepps did what it took to make her vision a reality and give an amazing resource to her community. Read more > >

Rhode Island Hospital’s Department of Neurosurgery Moves to New Location as Part of Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute

Rhode Island Hospital is taking the first physical step in the creation of the Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute (NPNI) with the relocation of the Department of Neurosurgery. Beginning on Monday, Nov. 28, adult and pediatric neurosurgery patients will receive care at the new facility on the Rhode Island Hospital campus, on the sixth floor of the Ambulatory Patient Center (APC) building. Neurosurgery joins the other flagship disciplines of the NPNI — neurology and psychiatry – in the Ambulatory Patient Center.

The NPNI, launched in August 2010 with a $15 million gift from the Frederick Henry Prince 1932 Trust, was created to enhance the profile and productivity of clinical neurosciences and research at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University, creating a strategic, innovative and collaborative approach to treating some of the most complex and challenging neurological, psychiatric and behavioral health diseases. To meet this goal, the institute will serve as a bridge among the clinical departments of neurosurgery, neurology and psychiatry and will link to brain research within the Brown Institute of Brain Science being carried out at Brown and its affiliated hospitals.
