150 Years of Healing, Growth and Discovery

As the field of medicine began to grow in leaps and bounds, so did Rhode Island Hospital. By 1900, scientists in Europe and Russia had developed vaccines for anthrax, cholera and rabies; antitoxins had been discovered for tetanus and diphtheria; and aspirin had been developed. The history of Rhode Island Hospital is threaded through this most remarkable period of human history, occurring throughout a century and a half of pivotal developments in medicine, and contributing in turn to the ever expanding body of medical knowledge.

Of course, from the vantage point of the men and women who worked to realize the hospital’s founding, none of this was evident. They were motivated first and foremost by a desire to serve their community by caring for the sick.
