Radiation Therapy
Five
revolutions in the evolution of cancer treatment. All in one place.
Five of the world’s most advanced treatments for cancer are available
right here at The Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island Hospital.
The Trilogy Stereotactic System, gamma knife, radiofrequency ablation,
CyberKnife and electronic brachytherapy offer patients powerful,
effective eradication of tumors in less time and with fewer side effects
than traditional cancer treatments.
-
Trilogy Stereotactic
System: Trilogy can deliver all forms of external beam
radiation, and enables physicians to pinpoint cancer in the
head, neck and body. Trilogy shapes radiation beams to match the
shape of the targeted tumor, allows physicians to track the
tumor during treatment, and automatically makes adjustments for
movements, so patients can breathe normally while undergoing
treatment.
-
Gamma Knife:
The gamma knife is a precise and powerful tool for treating
certain tumors and vascular malformations in the brain,
effectively and without surgery. It delivers a single, high dose
of gamma radiation, which affects the diseased tissue while
sparing nearby normal tissue.
-
Radiofrequency
Ablation: Radiofrequency ablation destroys tumors using
heat, with minimal trauma to adjacent tissues. The procedure can
be performed with intravenous sedation on an outpatient basis,
and the risks of infection or blood loss are much lower than
with conventional surgery. Dead tumor cells are eliminated
through the body’s natural healing process.
-
CyberKnife:
CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery can be used to treat benign and
malignant tumors by delivering beams of high-dose radiation with
extreme accuracy. The procedure is painless and causes very few
side effects.
-
Electronic Brachytherapy: The Axxent electronic
brachytherapy system is used to treat early stage breast cancer
and endometrial cancer using a miniaturized linear accelerator
to deliver a radiation-emitting seed the size of a grain of rice
directly to the tumor site in order to help reduce recurrence of
the disease.
