Giving to Rhode Island HospitalThe Voices of Our CommunityGiving Back: James and Eva SeedJames and Eva Seed believe it is their responsibility to give back to their community. The couple recently proved that they stand behind their principles when they generously donated $250,000 to Rhode Island Hospital.
“Giving back is part of being responsible within your community,” says James Seed, who is also chairman of The Astra Ventures, Inc., in Providence. “What we have today is the result of someone before us making it all possible. In the cycle of life when you have some success, the circle has to come around by giving back…it is as basic as that.” The Seeds both had reason to admire Rhode Island Hospital; they had both had positive experiences in the hospital as patients. However, the Seeds became inspired to become financial supporters through their acquaintance Ron Boss, a long-time trustee of Rhode Island Hospital. Inspired by Boss’ deep commitment and dedication to the hospital, the Seeds decided to join him in support of the hospital’s future. The Seeds, who have two sons and a daughter, understand the value of having a state-of-the art facility so close to home. “For families in Rhode Island, it is a hidden gem to have such a well-established academic medical center and to not have to go to Boston or New York for everything,” James Seed says. He cites the hospital’s excellent reputation and specialty services such as orthopedics, which draw patients from outside the state along with students and professionals from around the world. He had his full hip replacement there. “Where else in the country can you find such a medical center with such a small population?” he asks. “We don’t realize how fortunate we are to have such quality care so close to home. It is a gift.” Recently, the Seeds personally experienced the new emergency department when Eva Seed suffered a bad fall in Providence. The Seeds were very impressed with the caring and dedication of the medical staff, the specialized crisis areas, and the state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment crucial to Eva’s healing. “Everyone was so very helpful, and the wait was even minimal,” says James Seed. The Seeds sum up their outlook on giving by acknowledging those whose generosity helped build and grow the hospital, and the need for that tradition to continue. “Rhode Island Hospital is the most important hospital that we have…it is there because people before us have created the institution. If the rest of us don’t do as people did before us, we will become consumers and not stewards.” |
