Alfred Buxton, MDAlfred Buxton, MD

Alfred Buxton, MD is a professor of medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and director of the division of cardiology at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals in Providence, Rhode Island.

Buxton is an internationally recognized leader in cardiac electrophysiology. He is the Ruth and Paul Levinger Professor in Cardiology and the director of the arrhythmia services and electrophysiology laboratory at Rhode Island Hospital.

His research interests include finding methods to predict and reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death as well as determining the mechanisms of abnormal heart rhythms. He was principal investigator of the Multicenter Unsustained Tachycardia Trial (MUSTT), funded by the National Institutes of Health, and conducts ongoing research investigating new applications for implantable defibrillators and pacemakers in the treatment of heart failure, prevention of sudden cardiac death and ventricular tachycardia. Buxton has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications.

Prior to joining Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals, Buxton held academic positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University in Philadelphia. In addition to his role in the Lifespan network, Buxton serves as the executive director of cardiology at the VA Medical Center and Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island.

Buxton chairs the Electrophysiology Database Committee of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association/Heart Rhythm Society and previously served in the United States Military for the Bureau of Epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control.

Buxton received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, and medical degree from University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, where he also completed residency in internal medicine and fellowships in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, and the Council on Clinical Cardiology of the American Heart Association. He is also a member of the Heart Rhythm Society. Buxton is named in the America’s Top Doctors guide by Castle Connolly for excellence in electrophysiology and his contributions to the field.
