COBRE CCRD R.I. Research Alliance

The Rhode Island Research Alliance has been a strong promoter of collaborative research opportunities in the state. The Alliance had its humble beginning as an executive luncheon sponsored by CCRD that brought policy makers, administrators and scientists from state government, the University of Rhode Island, Brown University and affiliated hospitals as well as the RI Congressional Delegation. Through the efforts of the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council (STAC), the R.I. Research Alliance was launched in 2006 as a statewide platform for increasing competitiveness for federal funds from large infrastructure networks such as Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) and COBRE, with investments from the research award program to promote the development of promising opportunities for collaboration.

In 2007, this program awarded $1.5 million to 32 scientists from 15 research institutions. In 2008, the alliance held its first symposium CCRD which was co-sponsored by COBRE centers at Woman & Infants Hospital, Roger Williams Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University, the University of Rhode Island, EPSCoR at Brown and URI, and INBRE at URI. The second annual RI Research Alliance Symposium was held on October 2, 2009 at the Rhode Island Convention Center byt the Rhode Island Science & Technology Advisory Council in cooperation with the COBRE, INBRE, CTSA and ESPCoR statewide networks. At this day-long event, local investigators from around the state showcased their current research in the fields of biomedical and life sciences. Keynote speakers were Robert Moyzis, Ph.D from the University of California, Irvine, and Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts.
