Reducing Youthful Dangerous Driving (RYDD)
Reducing Youthful Dangerous Driving (RYDD) is an educational program that was created to reduce high-risk driving and prevent motor vehicle crashes among young drivers in Rhode Island. The program started in 2001 and is a collaborative effort between the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital and the Rhode Island Family and District Court. RYDD is currently funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The program targets court-referred youth between the ages of 16 and 20 years old. The program consists of 20 hours and is completed in a three-week time period.
There are three components to the RYDD program:
- Program Scheduling and Survey Completion
This is a one and a half hour session during which participants receive their RYDD program schedule, learn about the requirements for their volunteer obligation and complete a survey. (If the participant is under the age of 18 he/she must attend this meeting with a parent.)
- Group Workshops
Participants are expected to attend all workshops. The workshops are each 2-3 hours in length and may include a variety or activities such as a slide show, video, demonstrations, and discussions. Upon program completion, all RYDD participants are required to write a two-page essay and complete a final survey.
- Volunteering in the Hospital or Community
Community service will take place either in Rhode Island Hospital or in the community. The hours must be completed within a three-week time period. Participants who are assigned to volunteer in the hospital are assigned to two weekend shifts. Participants assigned to volunteer in the community are assigned to a community agency. Volunteer hours will be supervised and accounted for by the RYDD staff.
