The Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital
Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
SBIRT Overview
Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment is a comprehensive approach to providing early intervention and treatment to those with risky alcohol use through universal alcohol screening. We will discuss each component of this model over the next several pages. While referral to treatment is not included in this diagram it is an important component of the SBIRT model which will be discussed later in the website.

Why should our trauma center integrate SBIRT into practice?
Alcohol interventions are associated with a reduction in alcohol intake and a reduced risk of trauma recidivism. Further new billing codes approved by the American Medical Association and the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services allow providers to bill for alcohol screening and brief intervention services.
Are pediatric trauma centers the right place for screening for alcohol use disorders? Yes, for two reasons:
1. A visit to the trauma center after an injury is a potential "teachable moment."
2. The trauma center is sometimes the only place of health care for this group in the community.
