Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)

Referral to Treatment

In GeneralSometimes adolescents who screen positive may benefit from being referred to another health professional or outside agency for more in-depth discussion of their alcohol use or issues that may be contributing to their alcohol use. This may need to occur because of the amount of alcohol use or the age of the patient. It is important to introduce the need for treatment referral to the patient using techniques that are consistent with the motivational interviewing approach. If referral to treatment is necessary, the focus of the brief interventions may be to discuss the need for referral with the patient.

Depending on the child and the issues surrounding his or her alcohol use, it may also be beneficial to involve the parent in their referral.

Development of a SBIRT program requires that centers have a local list of appropriate referrals for patients and their families, including both internal and external resources. To develop an appropriate list of referral resources it is helpful for trauma centers to conduct a mental health services inventory (to be further discussed in workshop 1).
