Cerebrovascular Surgery

DobersteinCurtis Doberstein, MD, attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania. After graduation, he moved to Montreal where, in 1988, he received his medical degree from McGill University. He then went to Los Angeles for a surgery internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in cerebral blood flow and a residency in neurosurgery at the University of California at Los Angeles. Doberstein is a board-certified neurosurgeon.

In 1995, Doberstein joined the Neurosurgery Foundation and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He now directs the Section of Vascular Neurosurgery at Rhode Island Hospital and co-directs the Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University Stroke Program. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at Brown University, where he earned the dean’s teaching excellence award in 2001. As a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, he serves on the Executive Committee of its Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery.

Doberstein specializes in surgery on the blood vessels of the brain, neck, and spinal column. He sees many patients with circulatory problems such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and carotid artery disease. He also treats people with nervous system tumors, including those of the brain and the skull base. Patients with degenerative spine disorders comprise another large part of his practice.

In addition to his clinical and educational work, Doberstein has also contributed to a variety of professional publications.

Other Team Members

Physician assistant Christopher Fries works with Doberstein. Fries graduated from El Camino College in California. After a stint as an emergency medical technician, he underwent physician assistant training at D’Youville College in Buffalo. He began work with the Neurosurgery Foundation in 2002. Fries evaluates new patients, answers patients’ medical questions, and orders prescriptions. For patients who need surgery, he provides care before, during, and after hospitalization.
