Volunteering at Rhode Island Hospital
High School Volunteers
On September 21, 2009, due to the H1N1 virus, Rhode Island Hospital implemented visitor restrictions. Anyone younger than 18 may not visit patients. As a result, Rhode Island Hospital volunteer services will not allow teens younger than 18 to volunteer in patient care areas. This limits the number of volunteer placements for teens. Therefore, we will not have any teen openings until spring/summer 2010. If you are interested in volunteering, then please register for an April information session. These sessions will be posted in March.
High school students interested in volunteering at Rhode Island Hospital must first attend a one-hour information session. Students must be at least 14 years old to volunteer at Rhode Island Hospital. To volunteer at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, students must be 17 or 18 and a senior in high school. Students under 18 must submit a signed permission slip.
High school volunteers work in the following areas:
- Greeters
- Dietary services
- Nurse aids
- Office support
- Recovery room
- Stock and supplies
- Central transport
Students are asked to commit a total of two to four hours per week for a total of 100 hours. Certificates or letters of completion will be given after the 100 hours are completed.
Volunteers will be asked to complete the following after their information sessions:
- Interview with the volunteer coordinator or manager
- Provide an updated immunization record
- Undergo two tuberculosis tests
- Complete an orientation
- Commit to a minimum of 3-4 hours per week
- Adhere to uniform and dress code policies
