Breast imaging is a specialized field in radiology. In some patients, procedures are performed in the breast imaging division to either obtain a sample of tissue or to help find an abnormality in the breast for the surgeon.
Rhode Island Hospital is the first hospital in Rhode Island to offer digital mammography. With digital mammography, the images can be stored and transferred via computer, and physicians can use specialized software to help interpret results. In a study, digital mammography was shown to detect up to 28 percent more cancers in some women.
The Anne C. Pappas Center for Breast Imaging at Rhode Island Hospital is a full-service breast imaging facility staffed by radiologists with special expertise in breast imaging and is designed to provide state-of-the-art breast imaging and intervention.
