Social work has a rich history in hospitals; Rhode Island Hospital established its social work services in 1911. Since then the department has been a participant in many significant changes affecting health care delivery. Today our department is made up of approximately 35 master's level clinical social workers and 3 bachelor's-level social work coordinators.
We provide services to patients of all ages throughout Rhode Island Hospital and its Hasbro Children's Hospital, including many outpatient clinics and the emergency departments. We are available 24/7 for urgent situations.
Hospitalization can be a stressful experience. Everyday problems become more difficult to manage when accompanied by an illness, trauma or sudden injury. You and your loved ones may face emotional and practical challenges that can seem overwhelming. Professional social workers are licensed and trained to help patients and families cope with medical crisis, and with the psychological and social issues related to their illness, injury or hospitalization.
If you or a member of your family would like to speak with one of our social workers, please call 401-444-5711.
